What is your approach to pet training?

Peak Pawtential is focussed on progressive, modern, force free training.
I am to keep up to date with accepted standards in training and behaviour and undertake CPD regularly to update my skills and knowledge.
We are rewards focussed, with an emphasis on helping your dog get it right and making sessions fun, friendly, and stress free for all involved.

Shouldn't I be using corrections when my dog does something bad?

Although to us, it might seem logical to do something to 'tell the dog off' it has been proven in various studies to be a less effective method of training or behaviour modification.
That is not to say the dog can 'do as they please' and have zero repercussions, but instead of using what are called aversives (something the dog doesn't like) to punish them we can instead look at methods that first and foremost, make it easy to get it right, and secondly, removal of something logically related to the undesirable behaviour.
So for example, the puppy keeps chewing on your shoe laces. So instead of telling puppy 'NO' or doing something unpleasant, we can look at removing that fun chewy lace from them, and presenting them with a better choice.

Is my pet too old to be trained?

NEVER!
Whether they are weeks old or grizzled and grey, Peak Pawtential ensure sessions are not only useful but enjoyable, and keep sessions short and sweet for easy focus!

Why should I trust my precious pup to training with you?

I am fully insured, with a VERY extensive coverage, I hold a full PVG and background check, I am qualified in human and advanced pet first aid, and most importantly, beyond anything else, your dog's enjoyment and safety is my paramount concern.

Do you use 'tools' in your training?

Peak Pawtential use Modern, Force Free methods where the use of things like prong, shock, e-collars and slip leads as training aides are not supported, and as such, we won't use them in your sessions.
We do offer a trade in, should you wish to trade your old tools for some amazing force free kit!

Do you take ANY dog?

I have zero qualms about any breed, size or age, however legally speaking, and in regards to my insurance, sadly I cannot train any 'banned breeds' (Here's hoping the legislation will change soon!)
I also am happy to work with human aggression and dog aggression cases, however, especially in initial consultations, I may suggest certain safety measures are put in place.

I don't want my dog getting fat! Why do you use food?

We use food, especially high value food, as this is a 'primary motivator' and this means dogs are programmed, biologically designed to find food desirable.
Some may seem reticent to eat when you've tried before for a host of reasons, which we'll discuss. (We also have a lot of other rewards we can use if needed!)

We also suggest removing some of their daily food quota when training, to balance out that extra, and when they begin to get it, the amount you feed gets much less!

Can you guarantee this will work?

If you are consistent, follow the advice and keep at training between sessions, maintain the methods and don't 'cheat' between sessions, you will definitely see results.
Unfortunately, life doesn't come with guarantees, and as such, no one can guarantee training because things change, humans are prone to error, but that is why, if you find things beginning to slip or you're having difficulty, even YEARS down the line, we will be there to help.

Ok, so you can work with dogs, but how are you with humans?

I have worked with a host of clients, from bold and big characters, to unsure, nervous and even people suffering their own mental health challenges and anxieties. It is part of my job to understand both ends of the lead, and treat both with compassion.
My own personal manner is what most would call empathetic, jovial and perhaps a little goofy. If I can laugh at myself, it puts everyone at ease, and helps clients feel less scared of mistakes.
If you are scared or worried about working with a trainer, don't hesitate to get in touch, even just to chat.
